Third Annual Principal For A Day provides insights into a diverse urban school district

Forty business and community leaders shadowed Minneapolis Public School principals on April 15 as participants in the Third Annual Principal For A Day sponsored by Achieve!Minneapolis, Time Warner Cable, and the Minneapolis Public Schools.

After a kick-off breakfast at Anwatin Middle School, guest principals, including Carlson Companies Chairman and CEO Marilyn Carlson Nelson, Minnesota Twins Baseball Club President David St Peter, and Geek Squad Founder Robert Stephens, headed to their assigned schools for a busy morning. As part of their duties as Principals For A Day, they made morning announcements, greeted students, met with faculty, sat in on budget sessions, visited classrooms, and enjoyed student performances.

After lunch at their schools, guest principals returned to Anwatin Middle Schools for a town hall meeting and debriefing with district officials to share their observations and insights. All agreed that being a principal in an urban school system is a difficult but rewarding job.

Principal For A Day is a model developed by PENCIL, Inc.(Public Education Needs Civic Involvement in Learning) in New York City.
