Eligibility

  • All applicants must be residents of Minneapolis.
  • Youth ages 16-21 are eligible to apply.
  • Youth who are fifteen may also apply if they will turn sixteen by June 16, 2008.
  • Young people who are currently attending college are not eligible to participate in the program. High school students enrolled in post-secondary education courses are eligible.
  • STEP-UP applicants should have a strong work ethic and the desire to gain valuable skills in a professional setting.

Acceptance into STEP-UP

  • Accepted applicants will receive an email providing details of the work readiness training in mid-February.
  • Applicants not accepted will also be notified by email at the same time.


Work readiness Training

  • Accepted applicants will be invited to attend three mandatory work-readiness classroom trainings and one mandatory mock interview event in March.
  • Returning participants who have completed work-readiness training in 2005, 2006, and/or 2007 will be required to attend one half-day training.
  • Work-readiness training gives STEP-UP participants the skills and knowledge to be successful in their summer jobs.
Jobs Available
  • STEP-UP interns work in a variety of industries, such as law, banking, healthcare, government, education, and retail.
  • STEP-UP interns work for U.S. Bank, Star Tribune, Target Corporation, Best Buy, Children’s Hospital, Hennepin County, and many other companies and organizations.
  • While most jobs are office positions, other opportunities include retail sales, concessions at the Metrodome, auto repair, translating, and landscaping.
Wage Information
  • All STEP-UP positions are paid.
  • Wages range from $7.00 to over $10.00 per hour.
