Programs: Workplace Tutoring
Workplace Tutoring
In 2002, only 52 percent of Minneapolis Public School students
passed the state reading test, compared to 80 percent of students
statewide. In recent years, Minneapolis students have scored
much lower than their peers on the Minnesota Basic Standards Tests,
which are required for graduation. Many factors including poverty
and ability to speak English can impact students’ success
on the tests, but one thing is clear:
Achieve!Minneapolis’ Workplace
Tutoring program is a proven way to increase student scores
on the Minnesota Basic Standards Tests.
Among students who were not predicted to pass the 2002 Minnesota
Basic Standards Reading Test, 58 percent of Workplace Tutoring students passed, compared to only 33 percent of a control group
of students. Likewise, among students not predicted to pass
the math test, 54 percent of tutored students passed, compared
to only 24 percent of students from the control group.
Higher Scores... and more!
Results show that Workplace Tutoring helps improve student
test scores. Other benefits include:
- connecting students with adult role models at the workplace,
- exposing students to the skills necessary to be successful
at the workplace,
- providing a convenient, short-term volunteer opportunity
for busy professionals, and
- helping adults understand the challenges of educating a diverse
urban student population.
How does the program work?
- The program targets middle-school students preparing to take
the Minnesota Basic Standards Tests.
- Middle-school students are transported to workplaces for
one-on-one tutoring sessions.
- Tutors and students meet weekly for eight to 16 weeks prior
to the tests.
- Sessions last between 1 and 1.5 hours.
- Tutors and students receive a curriculum to guide the tutoring.
- Breakfast or an afternoon snack is provided.
Why do teachers and school officials like Workplace Tutoring?
Workplace Tutoring aligns with Minneapolis Public School
priorities of increasing student achievement and improving student
test scores. Hosting the tutoring sessions at a business site
increases employee volunteerism and exposes students to work sites.
